| Free Abortion Center for Pregnant Underage Girls |

This Wednesday, the Women's Federation of Jiangxi Province helped the local provincial government to set up an aid center offering free abortions for pregnant underage girls.
The establishment of the center is intended to prevent young girls from carrying out illicit abortion procedures, which can cause physical harm or even death.
Through the new girl's aid center, girls under the age of 16 who become pregnant accidentally, and those over 16 who become pregnant after sexual assault can receive free operations to end the pregnancy. Female students who have unwanted pregnancies can also receive free abortions with the presentation of their student certificate.
The center also provides professional instruction to young people on sexual health and pregnancy through various methods such as telephone consultations, lectures and informal discussions.
Since the center was opened in June for its test run, 135 girls have received abortions and psychological consultations from the center, and there have been about 1200 telephone consultations.
Vice chairperson of Jiangxi's Women's Federation Pan Yulan explained that every year China has an estimated 20 million youngsters who become sexually active, and the average age for this is four or five years younger than that in the 1970’s. This results in an increase in premarital sex and unplanned pregnancies among underage girls.
