Israeli officials said Thursday that the full withdrawal from Lebanon has been delayed by disagreements over deploying UN and Lebanese troops in south Lebanon, local newspaper Ha'aratz reported. Despite the disagreements, some Israeli officials expected the final pullout would take place next week once the problems were iron out in ongoing security talk, the report said. On Tuesday, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) commander Maj. Gen. Alain Pellegrini said in a statement after meeting senior Israeli and Lebanese army officers that the Israeli troops would be out of Lebanon by the end of September. However, some Israeli military officials said on condition of anonymity that it would be difficult for Israel to complete the withdrawal by the Jewish holy day Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, which begins sunset Sunday. Israeli forces have been gradually withdrawing from areas the army captured during a 34-day fighting with Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas since a UN-brokered truce took effect on Aug.14. The Israeli army has transferred control of 90 percent of the territory it held in southern Lebanon to UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army, a senior military source said Monday night, adding that several hundred Israeli soldiers were still present inside Lebanon. |
