Beijing drivers will face fines of up to 200 yuan (26 U.S. dollars) under new rules aimed at ensuring traffic keeps flowing when vehicles stop because of minor accidents.
The Beijing Traffic Management Bureau has issued new regulations from July 1 which will require drivers to immediately move their vehicles, and clarifies responsibility for accidents.
Traffic snarls are common in this city of three million cars, as drivers wait for police and refuse to move their vehicles in fear of jeopardising insurance claims, the Beijing Times reported.
The Beijing Traffic Management Bureau's new rules cover drivers whose vehicles suffer minor damage, such as scratches or are in a rear-end collision.
Drivers must switch on their hazard lights and immediately move to a safe area away from traffic to exchange vehicle registration and contact details, the news report said.
Vehicles that are not immediately moved will be seized by the traffic management bureau and the offending driver fined.
Director Song Jianguo said the number of vehicles and new drivers had increased significantly in recent years, leading to a dramatic rise in vehicle accidents. |
