Beverages in Shanghai's supermarkets and shops are experiencing a large-scale price hike for the first time in three years, days after the New Year Holiday.
The Shanghai Morning Post reported that the prices for various beverages, such as milk beverages, carbonated beverages and fruit juices, have surged for about 10 percent in the past two week.
Many supermarkets were informed by beverage producers about the price hike since last November, but managed to hold the price till around the New Year.
Chen Jie, director of the city's Beverage Association, said this round of price hike is caused by the rising cost of raw materials like oil, milk powder and cost of labors.
Due to the price hike, many supermarkets canceled their year end sales promotions on beverages.
