At least one person was killed, two others were seriously wounded and scores of building were damaged after a 6.2-magnitude quake rocked Nias Island off Sumatra Island, Indonesia early Wednesday, military command at the island said.
A military officer at the military command for Nias regency Venri Cemroni said military officers and other rescuers were at the scene to find out more victims.
"One man was killed two others are rushed to the hospital. Buildings are damaged but they do not collapse," he told Xinhua on telephone from the island.
Nias Island was the closest with the epicenter of the quake, in which the quake intensity was 5 MMI (modified mercally intensity), while in other places 3 to 4 MMI, at Sibolga town in Sumatra Island and Singkil town, Andri Setiaji, an official of the meteorology agency here said.
In 2004, hundred of people were killed and hundreds of houses collapsed in Nias Island after a strong quake jolted the island, months after the tsunami in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island that killed over 170,000 people.
Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake hit zone called "the Pacific ring of Fire", where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
