Public Comments on Govt Work Report

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao listened as members of the public gave their views on the latest government work report, and then vowed that suggestions would make it into the final draft which will go to the National People's Congress in March.

The premier chaired five forums from Jan. 21 to Jan. 25 to solicit opinions on the government work report, which will be tabled for deliberation at the upcoming first session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), slated to begin on March 5.

Members from non-Communist Parties and various walks of life, including experts from social economic organizations along with those from science and technology, education, health, culture and sports circles, representatives from business circles, workers and farmers were asked to air their views on the report.

Participants unanimously endorsed the framework and main content of the report. They also raised fresh ideas and proposed revisions.

At the meeting attended by leaders of the non-Communist parties, participants offered suggestions on consolidating agriculture as the fundament for the country's development, speeding up the transformation of the economic growth mode, the building of an environmentally friendly society and the development of the private-sector and the economy financed by non-Chinese mainland and foreign investors.

At the meeting of economic and social experts and scholars, participants called for prompt and correct macro-economic control measures in line with domestic and international economic changes. Experts also raised suggestions on price stability, deepening opening-up and reform, speeding up educational and cultural undertakings, the balanced economic development of different regions, the implementation of rule of law and transformation of governmental functions.

At the meeting attended by representatives of entrepreneurs, participants raised suggestions on exploration and development of energy resources, the stable supply of grains and food, speeding up the reform and restructuring of enterprises, increasing the supply of low-rent and low-price houses; participants also put forward suggestions on giving more support to the industrialization of agriculture and medium-and-small size enterprises, increasing employment and the better control of the real estate sector.

At the meeting on science, education, health, culture and sports, experts raised some issues relating to support on vocational education, reform and development of higher education, giving more support to the education in western areas of the country. Experts from medical fields offered some suggestions on development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and reform of medical care system. Experts from the media voiced suggestions on enriching the life of farmers and carrying out a national campaign of reading.

At the meeting attended by representatives of grassroot organizations, participants raised suggestions on improving the welfare of teachers in rural areas, increasing the subsidy for farmers and more governmental support for pig-breeding in rural areas.

Wen said the opinions and suggestions made by participants reflect the reality of the country's social and economic development and will be incorporated into the final edition of the government work report.
