The statistics bureau in Shenzhen, a booming city in southern China, has announced that the per capita GDP (gross domestic product) hit the 10 thousand US dollars mark in 2007, the first city reaching the tally in the Chinese mainland.

Guangzhou Daily reported on Tuesday that the per capita GDP was 10,628 US dollars last year, which was calculated by the overall GDP of 676.5 billion yuan and the number of permanent residents of nearly 8.62 million.

Figures released from the bureau showed that the area of commercial houses for sale was 5.55 million square meters, 30 percent less than that in 2006. Deng Ping, head of Statistics Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, said the decline is partly due to increasing house prices so that many people chose to wait and see.

Meanwhile, based on random samples of 600 households, individual disposable income stood at nearly 25 thousand yuan, an increase of 10.2 percent compared to the previous year. The city's consumer price index was 4.1 percent more than that of last year, with the prices of foodstuff rising by 8.6 percent.

Additionally, car purchasing made the headlines among other sorts of consumptions, with an increase of 46.6 percent from 2006.
