The United Nations Security Council extended on Monday the mandate of the UN mission in Timor- Leste for one year until Feb. 29, 2009.
In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-member council condemned "in the strongest terms" the Feb. 11 assassination attempts on Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and "all attempts to destabilize the country."
The resolution urged the Timorese government to bring to justice those responsible for the assassination attempts and called on all parties in the country to engage in political dialogue and consolidate peace, democracy, the rule of law, sustainable development and national reconciliation.
In a related development, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's special representative in Timor-Leste, Atul Khare, announced on Monday the surrender of a member of the fugitive rebel group behind the apparently coordinated assassination attempts, and urged others to give up, said Ban's spokeswoman Michele Montas.
The UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste, which at full length has 1,608 UN police and 34 military liaison and staff officers, started its mission in 2006 under UN Security Council resolution 1704.
Timor-Leste's parliament approved on Friday an extension by 30 days of the state of emergency imposed after the attacks on the country's leaders.
Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta was shot and wounded in the stomach by rebel gunmen in a predawn raid on his home in the capital Dili on Feb. 11. Almost at the same time, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao also came under fire, but Gusmao escaped unhurt.
After the attacks, the country declared a state of emergency which was due to end on Saturday. |
